Being diagnosed with Breast Cancer is a devastating experience. It's not all Pink Ribbons. The first decision is do you want reconstruction? Comments like "You want to look normal don't you", can be hurtful. What is normal? Reconstruction can involve expanders and multiple surgeries. For me the decision was easy. I wanted to go Flat!
Post surgery, first was Chemotherapy that lasted six months. Extreme fatigue, lack of appetite and hair loss. Benadryl naps and a staff of angels made the experience pass quickly.
At first the scars are surrounded by wrinkles. Skin tugs, the surface is lumpy and sensitive. Port remains even past chemotherapy. Hair begins to grow back in.
You are marked with markers every day to line up the machines. As the treatment continues, the skin begins to burn.
Radiation is a daily event for 33 treatments. Painless but the fatigue continues. Riddley Tree Cancer Center made the experience wonderful. Music, colors and a caring staff.
After Radiation the skin heals quickly. The burn marks begin to lighten up and the scars can start to heal.
Celebrate each day!
Accepting your new body is key. It will never be the same but it is still beautiful.
Feeling gratitude for this new life.
